CARA \ DAVIDE
Founded by Cara Judd and Davide Gramatica, CARA \ DAVIDE brings together South African and Italian perspectives. Their work is shaped by experimentation with materials, techniques and processes, often developed in collaboration with specialist artisans.
It is difficult to give a single and fulfilling opinion or definition of Scandinavian design. To us, it's not simply a style but rather a movement; a cultural phenomenon that has been succeeded, challenged and evolved by many interpreters, often very different from one another yet all representing the different facets of the single body of work that is Scandinavian design.
CARA \ DAVIDE: Material and Making
CARA \ DAVIDE was established in Milan in 2016 by South African designer Cara Judd and Italian designer Davide Gramatica. Both trained in product design at IED Milan and developed experience spanning artisan workshops and industrial companies before establishing their studio. This combination of making and production continues to inform a practice centred on exploring what materials and processes can do.
Their work often begins by looking beyond a material’s conventional application. For Muuto’s Wave Tray, stainless steel, more commonly associated with industrial contexts, is shaped into a broad, undulating surface inspired by the movement of a wave. The result demonstrates an important aspect of the studio’s approach: using the properties and possibilities of a material to determine how an object takes shape.
